Liturgical Music Ministry | Print |

"Singing psalms, hymns, and inspired songs..." (Col 3:16)
The music of the Liturgy is the singing of the people. And the work of music ministry is to enable, empower, and enhance the music made by the voice of the Assembly as the Church does its work of praise and worship. In the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, "Lumen Gentium," the Second Vatican Council defines the Church as the People of God. This means that, for Catholic Christians, Church is not so much a place to go as it is our very identity as Baptized members of Christ's Body. Joining our voices in song is a powerful and uplifting way to experience unity as the Body of Christ, and to join with Christ in prayer and praise to the Father of Jesus and Creator of all.

Serving in Music Ministry: It's not for everyone, but it might be for you!
Music ministry at St. Pius X has plenty of room for people who are musically inclined, and can support those with various levels of musical training.

The Adult Choir sings at the 10:30 Mass most Sundays. It has openings for all voice parts. The ability to sing in tune is essential – most people have this ability – and music reading is very helpful. Music reading instruction is provided from time to time. Rehearsals are weekly.

Resurrection Choir sings at funeral and memorial Masses. Qualifications are similar to those for the 10:30 Choir, above. Funeral services usually take place at 11 am on Mondays through Saturdays, as the need arises.

Cantors: Each Mass includes a Cantor, who proclaims the Psalm, chants the Gospel verse, and assists in the leadership of the Assembly's singing. Music reading, along with a pleasant singing voice in the range of the general population, are essential qualities of a Cantor.

Contemporary Group: Comprised of guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and a small choir made up of middle schoolers, high school teens, and some of their parents, this group is looking to expand with new members, young and older, welcome.

Instrumentalists: Our parish would welcome those who play various musical instruments. Percussion, flute, violin, bass, and guitar are often heard in today's liturgical music, but virtually any instrument could find a valued place in the parish music ministry.
