Palm Sunday

The woman who pours perfumed oil on Jesus’ head, found in Mark’s account of the Passion, has always intrigued me. I never understood why she seemingly wasted such expensive oil when Jesus could love a cheaper one just as much. Jesus loves every little effort that we make to honor Him, so why waste the money?

What I often forget is that while Christ delights in every small act, He is worthy of more, worthy of everything. This passage calls us to the virtue of magnanimity, or simply, to do great things for God. Jesus deserves so much more than we can ever give Him, including the most expensive oil that exists. Rather than ask, “why waste the money?,” we need to ask, “how can I honor God more?”

How can you do great things for God this Holy Week?
